What a thermostat does
It switches the element on and off to hold the tank at the set temperature. When one fails it usually does so in one of two ways: stuck open, so you get no hot water at all; or stuck closed, so the element runs continuously and the relief valve dumps hot water — which shows up as a power bill rather than as an obvious fault.
Setting it
Australian regulations require stored water to be held hot enough to control Legionella, and delivered to bathroom outlets at a safe temperature. Storage temperature and delivery temperature are separate matters — delivery is controlled by a tempering valve, not by turning the thermostat down. Your plumber will set both correctly.
Is this the right one?
Universal thermostats cover most tanks, but the probe length and the clamp arrangement vary. If your system is a Rheem, Vulcan, Aquamax or Everhot, we also stock the matching clamp assembly. Send us a photo of the existing thermostat and the tank data plate and we will confirm before you order.
