Sacrificial Anodes for Hot Water Tanks
Every glass-lined hot water tank has a sacrificial anode in it. Its job is to corrode instead of the tank. Once it is spent, the tank itself starts to go — which is why replacing an anode is far cheaper than replacing a cylinder.
✔ When to replace one
- Discoloured or rusty hot water
- A rotten-egg smell from the hot taps
- Routine service — most anodes are checked every 5 years
- Before the tank warranty period ends, to keep the tank protected
