Why it matters
A thermostat only reads accurately if it is held firmly against the tank wall. If the clamp is corroded, bent or missing, the thermostat sits loose, reads cooler than the water really is, and the element runs longer than it should — which shows up as an unexplained jump in the power bill rather than as an obvious fault.
Replace the clamp any time you replace a thermostat on a tank where the old bracket is corroded.
