What it does
A sensor sitting dry in its pocket is separated from the pipe by a thin layer of air, and air is a poor conductor. The sensor then reads cooler than the water actually is, and lags behind changes. Thermal paste fills that gap so the sensor reads the real temperature, and reads it promptly.
Why it matters on a solar system
The controller decides when to run the pump by comparing the roof sensor against the tank sensor. If the roof sensor under-reads, the controller sees a smaller difference than there really is, starts the pump late, stops it early, and you lose solar gain you have already paid for. It is a small tube of paste standing between a correctly installed system and one that quietly underperforms for years.
How to use it
- Fill the sensor pocket — do not just smear the sensor tip
- Push the sensor fully home so the paste displaces around it
- Re-seal the pocket properly; a grommet or O-ring is cheap insurance
- Apply fresh paste every time a sensor is removed and refitted
