Silicone rubber grommet for a solar hot water roof sensor. Sold individually.
This is the small seal where the sensor lead enters the sensor pocket on the collector. Silicone rather than standard rubber, because it sits in the hottest part of the system and ordinary rubber hardens and splits there.
Why it matters
A perished grommet lets water into the sensor pocket. The sensor then corrodes, starts reading wrong, and the controller either runs the pump when it should not or fails to run it at all. It is a cheap part that protects a much dearer one.
When to replace
- Any time you pull a roof sensor out
- Grommet gone hard, cracked or perished
- Moisture found in the sensor pocket
Fitting note
Seat the grommet fully so it grips the lead all the way round. Lubricate with water only — petroleum-based grease degrades silicone.
