When the pump restarts it has to lift the entire column of fluid back up to the roof before circulation begins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat takes far more work than simply circulating fluid around a loop already full. This pump draws up to \u003cstrong\u003e165 W\u003c\/strong\u003e, where an open loop solar circulator such as the Wilo Star-Z NOVA draws about \u003cstrong\u003e5 W\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cstrong\u003eA standard solar circulator will not refill a drainback system\u003c\/strong\u003e — it does not have the head to lift the fluid, and the system will never start.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrainback is a third arrangement, separate from open loop and closed loop.
